Prof Lokesh Joshi

Founder

Prof. Lokesh Joshi is the Founder and Director of ABL. He is a world leading expert in carbohydrate biology (glycoscience) and takes an active role in the research, development, and innovation at ABL. He is also the Stokes Professor of GlycoSciences at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG). With 30 years of experience, his primary research interest is in the roles played by complex carbohydrates in living systems and developing technologies to understand the protein-carbohydrate relationship in health and during disease processes. He has published over 125 research articles and holds eight patents.

While based in Arizona State University, USA, he co-founded a university spin-out company, Arizona Engineered Therapeutics (AzERx) in 2003, which was acquired in 2006 for approximately $8m. In 2005 He was the Associate Director of the Centre for BioAnalytical Sciences with €10m funding awarded by BMS and IDA Ireland. In 2009, he was awarded a €5.2m grant by Science Foundation Ireland to establish Alimentary Glycoscience Research Cluster (AGRC) with the objectives of understanding the role of glycosylation in host-microbial interactions in the gut.
